Katrina devastated the Gulf of Mexico coast of the USA when it made landfall on 29th August 2005. New Orleans was worst hit. Levees failed, leading to the flooding of 80% of the city and thousands of deaths. There, looting by armed gangs was a major problem for security services, and the National Guard and Marines were dispatched to restore order.
